I’ve been playing competitive sports for as long as I can remember. While they may have taken their physical toll on me I couldn’t imagine what my life would have been like with them.

And now, as I prepare to get ready to play in the FIL World Championships next week I can’t help but be constantly reminded of ALL the reasons I “shouldn’t” be doing this. Thoughts pop into my mind like, “I’m just too old for this stuff” or “Training makes my body too achy and sore” or “ the running I need to do is too hard for an old guy like me!”

Now If this conversation or self talk occurred while I was training one of my clients I would most likely, no, I would definitely tell that client that using age as a reason to keep you from participating in an event like this is the biggest bull excuse you can come up with!

Age is no excuse…Period!

I mean come on, it’s The World Championships!

No one had proved my point more than a former client of mine, Jean Runyon. Jean was an inspiration to me and all those at RetroFIT that knew her. I started training Jean when she was 67 yrs. young. At that time she struggled with simple activities of daily living like walking and driving. She wasn’t very strong but she had an incredible zest for life. Of course she would get stronger and more fit as we put time into training but the real transformation began when I asked her one simple question. “If you could would you ever want to do a triathlon”? Her response went right to the age excuse where she responded, I can’t do that, and I’m too old! I didn’t ask if you could or not I asked if you could, would you want to? After she said, well yeah, sure!

As they say, the rest is history and before Jean passed away she competed in 3 triathlons!

What would you do if you could?

I’m doing the big lacrosse tournament because it’s here in Denver but if it weren’t I would still find something else to push myself. It might be a 100-mile mountain bike race or a multi-day fitness event but I’m going to do something!

It doesn’t need to be a big tournament like mine in order for you to find your, “If I could I would” event. It just needs to be something that gives you a greater purpose to push yourself and challenge you in an entire new way.

“Why bother” you might ask.

“I’m perfectly fine doing what I’ve been doing.”

The universe is a funny thing. If you push yourself you just may inspire someone else to push themselves and so on and so on. You never know how it will end up from there.

I don’t care who said this quote “ If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten”! All I know is that what matters is the truth of it and the result of it.

Age is what you make of it. John Glenn said’ “there’s no cure for the common birthday”.

To me, that mean’s I’m getting older anyway so being that’s just life well then I’m going to soak up every min out of every day in whatever I do.

Too busy! Not a good enough excuse. It just means you have to prioritize better. Hey, I’m busy too! I run a business, coach and play lacrosse and have a very active 3 yr old girl!

What does it mean to you?

I know I’m truly blessed to be able to have a chance to participate in the FIL lacrosse Championships. I don’t take it for granted for even 1 minute that I’m able to bike and run hard and still go after it so I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit around and take getting older lightly and just do enough to survive!

So, Come on, let’s mix it up a little and get outside your comfort zone.

Don’t settle for same ole same ole just because of that number you call your age!

I’ll ask you again, What would you do if you could?

Hey, If you need some ideas DO please give me a call, stop by the gym or drop me an email.

DO NOT sit on your bum and wait around for life to just happen.

Until next time,

Coach Billy C

P.S. Our first game is 7/16 at 10:30 and 2:00 pm at Dicks Sporting Goods Park.
