What is Physical Culture?

Physical culture is the term that is applied to health and strength training regimens. In the mid to late 20th century, the term “physical culture” became largely outdated. Today it is frequently replaced with terms such as physical education, fitness training, or even a term as simple as the word exercise.

Now for a quick history lesson: The physical culture movement began largely in the 1800s. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, a perception rose that members of the middle class were suffering from diseases of affluence. In other words, like many individuals today they were suffering from a sedentary lifestyle. As a result numerous exercise systems were developed. In this time period activities changed from folk games, dancing, sports, military training, and medical calisthenics. As time went on the physical culture movement continued and expanded.

If you ever hear the term physical culture today, just think exercise. Your physical culture can essentially be anything that gets you up off the couch, away from your computer and moving. So stop reading, get up and get moving!
